Let trans/nonbinary UAB students put the correct names on their diplomas

The Issue

Transgender and Nonbinary students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are being discriminated against by the UAB Office of the Registrar in that they are not permitted to list their correct name on their diploma. In requiring Transgender/Nonbinary students to legally change their name before allowing it to be placed on a diploma, UAB is forcing students to undergo an incredibly complicated and expensive process which in the state of Alabama not only intentionally excludes certain people such as felons, but also includes paying monetary fees, submitting fingerprints to law enforcement, appearing before a court, signing documents in the presence of a Notary Public or 2 witnesses, and other such frankly unnecessary steps.

By only allowing for people to put their legal names on their diplomas UAB is forcing transgender and nonbinary students to either jump through a series of costly and complicated hoops to change their legal name or accept a diploma with an incorrect dead name on it. As a school that likes to present itself as a bastion of diversity and inclusion, UAB is knowingly and significantly failing its transgender and nonbinary students.
