Petition for a Day of the Dead Emoji

The issue

We are proposing that a Day of the Dead emoji is added to the international emoji keyboard! We will be submitting this petition to The Unicode Consortium, the non-profit organisation that oversees the coding standards for texting and emoji.

Currently, holiday emojis are restricted to just a few very mainstream festivities, such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day and Christmas, but it’s about time that other cultures and celebrations were included. We believe that the world’s holiday emojis need to be much more diverse.

Day of the Dead is celebrated by thousands of people throughout Mexico and the rest of the world. Family and friends gather to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and to help support their spiritual journey. The annual holiday takes place every year on 1 and 2 November.

Here at Cartel Food Co., we have always loved Mexico’s colourful celebrations and family traditions, including Day of the Dead. Everything is so incredibly rich and vibrant from the music, tastes and spices, to the decorations, clothing and other visual prompts. It is one of the many reasons we were so attracted to Mexican cuisine in the first place. We strongly believe that Day of the Dead deserves its very own emoji to allow the people celebrating to share and express themselves during this very special time of the year.

If you agree, please let Unicode hear you, and sign the petition.
