I would like to highlight several excerpts from an article published today in La Vanguardia, one of Spain’s leading newspapers.

The financial crisis is detailed in a UN report published a few days ago, which warns that a "financial collapse" could affect the international organization as early as August if member states, particularly the United States, fail to pay their assessed contributions...

The economic problem has been aggravated by delays in payments from the other major contributor, China...

Washington owes approximately $2 billion to the organization's regular budget, in addition to another $2.2 billion earmarked for peacekeeping missions. "The short answer is that our financial problems are due to the fact that a major contributor, the United States, is not paying its dues," Farhan Haq, UN spokesperson, told Politico.

The United Nations must reaffirm and vigorously promote the principles of peace, freedom, international cooperation, and respect for human rights that inspired its founding in 1945 and have guided the major international agreements reached since then.

As citizens of the world, we cannot remain indifferent. We must defend these values against authoritarian regimes and against all those who threaten peace, fundamental rights, and the future of humanity.
