I still believe that the United Nations, despite its deterioration, still has the possibility of bringing about a major change in humanity. Let us consider some facts:

• It is evident that many Heads of State and Government claim to defend their country, but in reality, they defend their own personal interests and act against their citizens and against humanity. Just a few examples: the Iranian people desire freedom and a change of regime, but Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, does not yield; he prefers the sacrifice of his citizens. According to various sources, the Russian army is suffering around 30,000 casualties per month in Ukraine, yet Putin does not yield either; he prefers to sacrifice his citizens. Prominent figures warn Trump that his policies are causing serious damage to the United States; nevertheless, he does not yield either. He places his own interests and those of his inner circle first, regardless of sacrificing immigrants and weakening the institutions of his country and of the world.

• We can all see that the world is changing. Trump’s own words explain it:

“It is natural and just that all nations put their interests first and guard their sovereignty. … The United States will put our own interests first and, in our relations with other nations, encourage them to prioritize their own interests as well.”

When autocratic governments speak of protecting their country’s sovereignty, they are not referring to protecting their citizens; in reality, they mean defending their own personal interests.

• All governments in the world, both autocratic and democratic, fear widespread public opinion turning against them. To prevent it, autocrats use censorship and repressive systems, while democracies often choose not to confront issues that could politically weaken them.

To ask the United Nations to widely disseminate its founding values is to ask it to educate humanity in the fundamental principles of coexistence and progress, and to lay the groundwork so that, over time, people may raise their voices against those rulers who act against them, whatever country they may belong to, and to support those who truly defend them.
