We must reaffirm the idea we stand for, and to do so, allow me to share some figures that may surprise you:
In 2022, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the world spent $2.1 trillion on armaments.
The United Nations, in its Human Development Report, estimates that extreme poverty worldwide, defined as those living on less than $5.50 a day (approximately less than €140 per month) could be eradicated by spending $0.5 trillion per year.
In other words, each year the world spends 4.2 times more on armaments than what would be needed to eradicate poverty for all of humanity.
However, military spending continues to rise. Thus, in 2024, global arms expenditure had already reached $2.7 trillion, and in 2025 the European Union, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has been forced to increase its defence spending.
Power increasingly prioritizes its own interests while ignoring those of humanity.
These days we are witnessing how the theocratic regime in Iran, to defend its privileges, does not hesitate to cut communications and kill its own citizens. Some observers estimate 2.000 deaths.
It is unlikely that politicians will solve these problems, nor will isolated actions that we can undertake (Iran's important popular movement has failed to end despotic power)
Until better alternatives are proposed, the viable solution we advocate is to ask the United Nations to actively disseminate its founding principles worldwide, so that a significant part of humanity can embrace them and form a common front against despotic power.
- Contribute $2 or $3 per month so that Change.org can promote the initiative. With just $3, around 100 emails can be sent, generating approximately 10 signatures.
- Once a month, share our proposal to the United Nations with three or four people.
Thank you once again.
