Protect our children: Restrict access to pornographic content online

The Issue

A report by Childline has found that 1 in 10 children aged 11-12 worry that they are addicted to pornography.

The American College of Pediatricians has stated that “The availability and use of pornography has become almost ubiquitous among adults and adolescents.  Consumption of pornography is associated with many negative emotional, psychological, and physical health outcomes”.

The amount of pornographoc content and the ease at which it can be accessed online, either intentionally or accidentally, is a child protection issue. If a child were exposed to people actively engaging in sexual activity in their home this would be considered child abuse: so why are we not more concerned about online porn?

20 years ago there was far less content available online and what was available was rarely free, it required credit card details or setting up an account to access. Over the years the rules have become lax; sadly we’ve allowed it to happen.

We feel that access to pornographic content online must be controlled to protect the mental well-being of our children.

Therefore, we petition the UK government to enact a law making it illegal for such content to be accessed without the input of credit or debt card details to varify age.
