Ban factory farming, tax animal products and make them a luxury item.

Intense animal agriculture and the factory farming of animal products is destroying the planet. The animal agricultural industry is the leading cause of climate change and produces more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation industry. I also learned that it is the leading driver of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution and habitat destruction. Animal agriculture drives species extinction; habitat destruction is caused by clearing forests and converting land to grow feed crops and for animal grazing. Predators and competition species are frequently targeted and hunted because of a perceived threat to livestock profits. The widespread use of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilisers used in the production of feed crops often interferes with the reproductive systems of animals and poisons waterways which make there way into the ocean. The overexploitation of wild species through commercial fishing, game meat trade as well as animal agriculture’s impact on climate change, all contribute to global depletion of species and resources.

I believe that by making animal products a luxury item produced only by small scale, high welfare and artisanal communities of farmers and highly taxed to the public, it will dramatically reduce the effect of animal agriculture on the environment. This change will also help support rural farming communities and unique cultures on the brink of being lost while simultaneously taking back power from large environmentally irresponsible companies that treat animals as products and pollute the planet on a disastrous scale, lobbying to stop the improvement of animal welfare and the essential steps that need to be taken to improve the industries affect on the environment, all in the name of profit.

I would like this issue to be addressed on a local and national scale and to encourage discussion and debate on this matter as urgently as possible.
