Omar is excellent in his field of Computer Science. A Ph.D student of the John Hopkins University, he was wrongly detained in Jordan and his visa was cancelled without any explanation by the US Embassy. Hundreds of non-US citizens come to this country to expand their education and then contribute to this country's growth. While it is a loss to the US and the world, it is a huge disappointment and discourages students from visiting their hometown before the completion of their degrees (sometimes lasting 7-8 years). Omar was a student for 6 years and was denied re-entry on the eve of his Ph.D defense. However, John Hopkins University held his thesis defense via video conferencing, and awarded him his PhD. He has moved on, and now works at Microsoft's Cairo office.
The US is giving the wrong message to it's foreign students. Such insecurity may push them to go back to their home countries or worse still, never come to the US for pursuing higher studies.
