It's not over yet - don't even think it is.

The flag has come down across the street.
This has happened before only to be hoisted again when the heat blows over. I love a good gaslighter. But I was so happy to see my son's smile and we had the tough conversation that just because it's not there doesn't mean it is gone and we must continue anti-racist education.
But this was a petition for all hate symbols LIKE the Confederate Flag. Do people forget there is more than one symbol of hatred?
My journey doesn't stop here. There are more of these symbols all over our community and county and country.
In this process, I have begun to see a dark underbelly of discrimination in our community. We are so privileged to live here in this beautiful community - the views, vistas amazing food, things to do - and most people are great! But it is not a Eutopia. I have heard from all sorts of families and people who are marginalized here. From BIPOC to LGBTQ2S to homeless to addicts to obese to religious denominations who have been treated with indiscretion or they have needed to feel they must hide their differences. People who have had hateful and derogatory words and symbols written on their doors, only to be told it is THEIR job to remove it...
I have heard third party stories from our incredible refugee community...
They all break my heart. I truly thought we were all better than this.
These people should be allowed to feel proud, acknowledged, heard and accepted.
This is what I would like to see:
First step - talk about it.
Second step is two parts. A) Town needs to make a symbolic gesture at LEAST. Create a bylaw against hate symbols including flags, posters, stickers propaganda. This shows us they mean business and truly want to affect change. B) Create safe spaces for all of our diverse community to make a formal cry for help and receive support. Better communication between council and networks so they stop having their heads in the proverbial sand of the beauty we live in. We need more of these places - or at least better access and visibility to them - stop hiding them in the back 40 because you don't want to "ruin the view!" Do you have suggestions how this can be done? It's a tough one.
Third Step - Goes to the top with Council's help so the bylaw is supported top-down also.
I am doing this for my son and your children who are the future of our community and country. Make their lives better than ours
