Dear Berkeley Unified School Board of Directors Ty Alper, Josh Daniel, Beatriz Leyva-Cutler, Judy Appel, Karen Hemphill, Petra Silve, Alaunta Keys,

We call on you to address a situation that threatens to interrupt the education of hundreds of students currently receiving an excellent education in Berkeley: the displacement of REALM High School.

REALM serves an amazing community of 252 middle and 337 high school students from Berkeley, Richmond, Oakland, San Pablo, Antioch and other

Bay Area cities. We are a diverse and thriving community, including 60% Latino students and 20% African American students. Almost 80% of our students qualify for Free / Reduced lunch and about 22% of our students receive Special Education services.

Many students travel long distances to REALM because it is a school where kids find a love of learning, an inspired and motivated set of teachers, and a true sense of community. And as a condition of its charter, REALM is required to have open enrollment, accepting all students who apply until enrollment is filled.

Thanks to a lease with Berkeley Unified School District, Berkeley has been home to REALM since we opened in 2011. But the future of our school is in peril.

We recently learned that our students and teachers are facing displacement in the 2017-2018 school year. At its January 25th meeting, the BUSD Board of Education voted to end our lease of the building at 1222 University Ave as part of its consent calendar. It is unclear whether the board was aware that ending the lease could result in closing down REALM High School and the displacement of hundreds of students / families, our unionized (BFT) teachers, and amazing support staff.

We have been hard at work to locate an alternative space, but due to rising rents and limited availability, we have not yet been able to find another location for our students.

We are asking you to extend our lease for one additional year, through the 2017-2018 school year, so that we can find a new home for our community.

Specifically, we urge you to include REALM’s new proposal in your March 22nd meeting, so that the REALM community can share our hopes, plans and fears with you, and give you time to discuss and finalize a thoughtful decision that includes community input.

We know that the City and District are committed to providing sanctuary to students, to ensuring safety and protection for all kids. Please let us communicate our dire situation to you on March 22nd.

Les pedimos que aborden una situación que amenaza con interrumpir la educación de cientos de estudiantes que actualmente reciben una excelente educación en Berkeley: el desplazamiento de la Escuela Secundaria REALM.

REALM sirve una asombrosa comunidad de 252 estudiantes de secundaria y 337 estudiantes de preparatoria provenientes de Berkeley, Richmond, Oakland, San Pablo, Antioch y otras ciudades del área de la bahía. Somos una comunidad diversa y próspera, incluyendo 60% de estudiantes latinos y 20% de estudiantes afroamericanos. Casi el 80% de nuestros estudiantes califican para almuerzo gratis / reducido y alrededor del 22% de nuestros estudiantes reciben servicios de educación especial. Muchos estudiantes viajan largas distancias a REALM porque es una escuela donde los niños encuentran un amor por el aprendizaje, un grupo inspirado y motivado de maestros y un verdadero sentido de comunidad. Y por ser escuela Charter, REALM está obligado a tener matrícula abierta, aceptando a todos los estudiantes que apliquen hasta que el cupo esté llano.

En su reunión del 25 de enero, la Junta de Educación de BUSD votó por terminar nuestro contrato de arrendamiento del edificio ubicado en 1222 University Ave. como parte de su calendario de consentimiento. No está claro si el consejo sabía que poner fin al contrato de arrendamiento podría resultar en el cierre de la escuela secundaria REALM y el desplazamiento de cientos de estudiantes / familias, nuestros maestros sindicalizados (BFT) y un personal de apoyo increíble.

Hemos estado trabajando duro para localizar un espacio alternativo, pero debido al aumento de los alquileres y la disponibilidad limitada, todavía no hemos podido encontrar otro lugar para nuestros estudiantes.

Le estamos solicitando extender nuestro arriendo por un año adicional, el cual sería el año escolar 2017-2018, para que podamos encontrar un nuevo hogar para nuestra comunidad. En concreto, le instamos a incluir la nueva propuesta de REALM en su reunión del 22 de marzo, para que la comunidad de REALM pueda compartir sus esperanzas, planes y miedos y darle tiempo para discutir y finalizar una decisión reflexiva que incluya a la comunidad.

Sabemos que la Ciudad y el Distrito están comprometidos a proveer santuario a los estudiantes, para asegurar la seguridad y protección para todos los niños. Por favor, permítanos comunicarles nuestra terrible situación el 22 de marzo.
