The Stella Project

The Issue

Stella was a sweet three year old pitbull mom who ended up at Dallas Animal Services with her 5 month old daughter Jane. How they ended up at Dallas Animal Services isn't the story. The story is that Stella and her mom shared a kennel at Dallas Animal Services.  Stella was a great mom. Kind to her daughter and kind to every person that interacted with them.  However, a decision was made that makes no sense - to look at space based on numbers and euthanize Stella and leave her daughter behind.  It didn't make space as Jane sits alone in her kennel wondering where her mom went.  Scared.  How she felt to watch her mom be dragged from her all because of a number. Did the person who made that decision ever meet either of them.  Ever give any thought to their decision. They didn't or it wouldn't have been made.  And they weren't the person who went and took Stella from Jane.  The shelter manager, a middle manager, didn't perform the euthanasia even though it is in their job description.  Staff at a management level at Dallas Animal Services are supposed to be humane and have hearts - the person that made this decision clearly has no heart and isn't about animal welfare.

The Stella Project won't bring Stella back nor ease the pain for poor Jane. Nor will it ease the pain for all the volunteers who loved Stella.  The Stella Project aims to get justice for Stella and Jane.  To ensure what happened to them never happens to another family at Dallas Animal Services.  Or for siblings kenneled together that the same things happens to time and time again. We need justice. We need to speak up for them.  They didn't have  a voice.

This should have never happened at Dallas Animal Services. The paid staff who did this need to be accountable.  We ask for checks and balances to be put in place.  To explain to every single person who signs this petition why this decision was made.  To apologize to those who cared. Dallas Animal Services needs to rebuild trust.

This should have never happened and shouldn't have happened. This is Dallas Animal Services and Stella deserved better.  Jane deserved to not have this happen.  And the individual who made the decision needs to no longer have anything to do with animal welfare.
