The South African Department of Health: Make Pulse Oximetry (PulseOx) a compulsory test on newborn babies

The Issue

PulseOx is a simple, cost effective and non-invasive test that measures the level of oxygen in a newborn’s blood. It is not yet a part of the battery of standard tests performed on newborns before they are sent home. Low oxygen levels are a sign that something is wrong with the baby’s lungs or heart and can help professionals identify Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs) before the baby goes home. Early detection leads to saved lives. Please help us make Hudson's Law a reality and help save the lives of the 1 in 100 babies born with CHDs.
