The Sierra Madre: A Natural Treasure Under Threat

The Issue

Sierra Madre is known as the “Backbone of Luzon”. It is home to around 40 percent of the Philippines' forest cover and supports a rich biodiversity, with 3,500 plant species 58 percent of which are endemic.

Rising to 6,283 feet and stretching over 540 kilometers, the Sierra Madre mountain range serves as Luzon’s natural fortress.

Sierra Madre's most renowned role is its function as a natural barrier against tropical cyclones. When storms approach from the Pacific, the mountain range slows down and deflects strong winds, significantly reducing their intensity before they reach inland , Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Bulacan, Rizal, and Quezon),”

The present construction of Kaliwa Dam where it destroys the backbone of the Philippines is not a good move for the government. It would be disastrous for main island’s storm defences as well as biodiversity, say conservationists. It will surely supply many places specifically in NCR but many people will suffer when typhoons will hit our country. This mountain ranges serves as a barrier since before the typhoon reaches different regions, it will be slowed down or the impact of it will be reduced because it hit the Sierra Madre first.

Now 90% of the original rainforest is gone. Illegal logging, mining and quarrying have taken a toll. And without the tree roots for stability and the vast canopies of the forest to absorb the heavy rains, landslides and flash floods are becoming more common, especially as the frequency and the severity of the storms increase.

We have to save and protect the forest of Sierra Madre before it's too late. Illegal logging, timber poaching, mining and kaliwa dam should be stop. It threaten the people's life, vital ecosystems and biodiversity of the Sierra Madre mountain range. Its time to protect who protects us.

Solution

1. Plant trees.

2.Stop destructive project of humans

3. Managing waste.

4. Use eco friendly products.

5. Support the government campaigns to stop illegal logging.
