Stop Walmart From Going Into The Durbin Town Center

This petition had 631 supporters

Low prices. High Crime. That's what articles written on websites like Time.com, Huffington Post, and Bloomberg are saying about Walmart. We know that while crime happens inside Walmart and their parking lots, it attracts those same criminals the the areas surrounding it.

Many of us are aware that Durbin Creek will soon to be home to a major town center, called Durbin Park. It was announced here that Walmart would be one of the major anchor stores for Phase 1.

This petition is to stop Walmart from going into Durbin Creek. While none of us can tell the future, what we do know is that based on studies and facts conducted in the past, Walmart, who touts its low prices, brings with it high crime. According to this Huffington Post article regarding Walmart and the impact on areas surrounding it, “If the corporation built a new store, there were 17 additional property crimes and 2 additional violent crimes for every 10,000 persons in a county.”

That same article is also quoted as saying, “Counties with more social capital — citizens able and willing to speak up about the best interests of the community — tend to have lower crime rates,” Pyrooz said in the release. “Counties with more crime may have less social capital and, therefore, less ability to prevent Walmart from building.”

Let's use our voice and stop Walmart from entering our community.
