The Sexism of Carnegie Dress Code Enforcement
The Sexism of Carnegie Dress Code Enforcement
The Issue
To The Wrong,
We the people are not men. We are not raised to think that a woman is only worth her body. We are not raised to think that if a woman wears certain clothes she's "asking for it" nor are we raised to think we will be treated above our gender counterparts.
That is because we, the people, are women. Women who are judged and shamed for the skin on our back and the size of our chest. We are treated based on appearance. A woman is not a danger or distraction to a man. She is a human being with dreams and thoughts and opinions. Opinions that state "a woman is worth more than her appearance and her image in a man's eyes".
You, the opponents, are sexist and you are biased. You are part of a time where rape culture was part of daily life. You would rather teach boys that women are objects before repairing your own view.
We the people will not stand for it. Because, despite the fact we live in the world of man, it is from a woman that every great man is made. So we will make these men great by showing them a woman is worth more than her body. We will prove to you again and again that a woman is not only seen sexually. We as women will stand against any rules you try to enforce that have no value or purpose except to restrict us. If you pay enough attention to a person's clothes instead of the person underneath, you're no better than the people who see us as objects.
We aren't asking to walk around in bikinis and bras. We're asking you to listen to how you've hurt us. We're asking that you see that we are people about to go into a world that will only judge us the older we get. A world where we'll have to do this same process over and over again until no woman is restricted again.
We ask for simple things in a city where the head index can reach 110⁰, and the things we ask for are as follows:
-we ask for our shoulders to not be sexualized
-we ask for our stomachs to not be sexualized
-we ask for our legs to not be sexualized
-we ask for men not to be treated like they cannot dress inappropriately when wearing things shorter than us
-we ask for you not to judge a woman based on appearance, but her mind.
We ask for you to listen. And to see that when you speak about how we dress, you speak about our very existence. An existence that women already have to shrink for the minds of men to comprehend.
