WHAT HAPPENED …
December 14, 2018: the #UmbrellaNine trial was adjourned and the judgement postponed to 9th April 2019 (read more about it here).
February 21, 2019: the worldwide assault against human rights defenders and activists had been exposed by Amnesty International Report (read a one-page sum up or download the full report here).
March 2, 2019: Hong Kong is well in line with the global trend and the old Chinese motto “Kill one to educate a hundred”, given the instances of repression of freedom of expression targeting university students (read about the latest episode updates).
Right Now: Our network grows bigger! (check our profile for details!) And our aim grew more ambitious! While our support for the #UmbrellaNine remains steadfast, our focus is shifting - with their blessings - to a greater calling for the public good: the issue of freedom of expression!
… WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW …
- As the judgment date is approaching, it is an opportunity for you and us to focus our action in a short period of time: the 8-days countdown starts now!
- China accepted the UN recommendation about freedom of expression, assembly and free human rights activism: the handling of this trial as well as current related events are important cases to monitor China’s implementation of her own claims!
- While latest news admonish us about the fact that not too far from Hong Kong activists just disappear, it is really time to break the borders: Hong Kong people’s rights are human rights that are worth speaking up for until full recognition and protection is achieved!
Right Now: We accept the challenge of being more inclusive: beyond borders, beyond universities, beyond generations, beyond class and beyond local political stance. Freedom of expression is a priority as the cornerstone of understanding, equality and democracy!
… WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NEXT!
- Keep it monitored!
Follow up the news and make yourself aware!
- Keep it accessible and for all!
Find your own voice and share resources to involve as many diverse people as possible!
- Keep it signed!
Spread the message and be creative using #HKFreedomOfExpression
OUR REQUESTS!
- Stop prosecutions against peaceful protesters that are aimed at stopping participation in peaceful assembly and stop silencing critical voices;
- Revise the Hong Kong Public Order Ordinance in accordance with international human rights law and standards to respect and protect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
