18 JULY, 2018 What happened to the dream of the Rainbow nation in South Africa? Dear supporter of this petition Thank you for your unwavering support to stop farm murders in South Africa. Twenty-four years ago we had our first democratic elections in South Africa ushering in a new dispensation of hope, great expectations and the dream of a new South Africa which we all hoped would become the RAINBOW NATION. Today, that dream is no more. What South Africa has become is just the opposite. I am a realist and not a prophet of doom and gloom. As a pastor and a spiritual leader of my congregants in Cape Town, I am compelled to speak truth to power. I wish to quote one of my favourite poets whom I studied as a student at UWC in the 1970’s; the poet is William Blake, and the poem, which accurately describes South Africa today, is “The Second Coming”: “Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.” The metaphor of a spinning ‘widening gyre’ of lawlessness can be applied to South Africa today, which is spinning out of control. Endemic crime, looting, greed and corruption are common place, and our governing authorities (the police and army) are no longer in control. ‘Things fall apart’ – the centers of certainty, peace, law and order, racial harmony, decency, and common sense are no longer holding our South African nation together. Every day in South Africa is another day of strife, disharmony, violent community riots, the burning of tyres in the streets; violent cash in transit heists by armed bandits using explosives and automatic machine guns to rob cash in transit vans; the looting and burning of shops and public amenities, schools and universities by local communities and rioting, angry students; and the stirring up of racial hatred by short-sighted political leaders. When will peace, law and order ever return to South Africa again? In 1994 we assumed that the tide was turning for us as a nation, but now there is a new political shift in South Africa. The dream of a rainbow nation has been shattered permanently, and the reconstruction of a new, peaceful South Africa will perhaps take decades. I should be at the UN today participating in the centenary celebrations of late President Nelson Mandela, but instead I will be at the UN today protesting the unbridled lawlessness taking place in South Africa which result in the killing of many South Africans throughout the country.
