It is important to note the crucial role of the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide in the United Nations.
Allow me to quote from the United Nations website in this regard:
http://www.un.org/en/genocideprevention/special-adviser-prevention-genocide.html
“Adama Dieng, a Senegalese jurist, was appointed as Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide on 1 September 2012.
Prior to his appointment, he had served since 2001 as Assistant Secretary-General and Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Dieng was the Secretary-General of the Geneva-based International Commission of Jurists for ten years (1990-2000).
During his tenure, Mr. Dieng was appointed as the United Nations Independent Expert for Haiti (1995-2000) and was also appointed as the Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Malawi, in 1993.
He was the driving force behind the establishment of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights as well as the draft African Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.
Mr. Dieng is a former Board member of various institutions, including the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, the International Human Rights Institute (Institut Rene Cassin) and the Africa Leadership Forum.
Mr. Dieng is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Review of the Red Cross. In recognition of his contribution to strengthening the rule of law and the fight against impunity, he was appointed an Honorary Chairman of the Washington-based World Justice Project.”
THE CHALLENGE OF KEEPING RELIABLE STATISTICS OF FARM MURDERS AS A PRIORITY CRIME IN SOUTH AFRICA
Most commercial farmers in South Africa are asking their unions to request our government to classify farm murders as a priority crime which was done before, but which the state stop to do, with no explanation.
See: https://africacheck.org/factsheets/factsheet-statistics-farm-attacks-murders-sa/
“In October 2017 AfriForum released a new commercial farm murder rate of 156 per 100,000. We have contacted them to get clarity on how it was calculated. We will update this section of the report once we receive a response.
The AfriForum Research Institute collected and assessed statistics for 2016/17, recording 357 attacks and 74 murders between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017.
The police’s 2016/17 statistics on farm attacks differ (638) but their tally of farm murders was the same.
The institute’s report notes that their statistics were collected by monitoring traditional and social media. They also rely on security networks and victims to directly report attacks.”
What is alarming about this article is that the police’s 2016/17 statistics on farm attacks differ (638) but their tally of farm murders was the same which is a rate of 156 per 100,000.
This is about three times the general murder rate in South Africa, and it is exactly this concern which must be investigated by the Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide in the United Nations.
