Support for West Dunbartonshire Flat-Roof Homeowners

Support for West Dunbartonshire Flat-Roof Homeowners
The Issue
This petition is to request financial support from the Scottish Government for the private homeowners of flat-roofed properties in West Dunbartonshire. I ask friends, family, neighbours and communities both local and further afield, to please show your support for these residents by signing this petition. This was previously brought before the Scottish Housing Minister, Margaret Burgess, at the Scottish Parliament on 6th May 2015, however, no financial support was given and as a result of this, the homeowners have been left abandoned, with thousands of pounds of debt and in desperate need of assistance. The flat-roofed properties in West Dunbartonshire have been found to have defective roofs and flooring. Some of these properties have had roofs collapse, with several so defective that they have been deemed uninhabitable, others requiring new roofs to be built and many still to be surveyed. The owners do not have the funds to carry out repairs, some do not even have the funds to get a survey so are unaware of the extent of damage and several homes are so defective that it simply is not cost-effective to repair the damage. I raise this petition as my mother, Mary Goldie (69 years of age), is one of these homeowners and has now lost all her life savings. Mary is a widow, a cancer patient, a loving mother and grandmother and an ex Head-Teacher with West Dunbartonshire for over 26 years. After months of sleeping on a mattress in the living room, she was advised that it was no longer safe to stay in her home at all and has been forced to once again take out a mortgage to live in a small flat. My mum has been left with constant anxiety over this and she is not alone. There are over 90 flat-roofed properties within West Dunbartonshire. These are a mix of privately-owned and council-owned properties, however, all were originally built by the council. No structural survey would have discovered this issue and insurance companies will not pay out anything. West Dunbartonshire Council offered my mother a paltry amount for her home and have offered no further assistance to her or her neighbours. The Scottish Government also refused to give the homeowners financial assistance. This is simply not good enough and morally wrong. Ministers of the Scottish Parliament, I ask you to please review the signatures and comments of those below and to reconsider the plight of these homeowners. They are thousands of pounds in debt and several are still living within unsafe homes. This government has been positive and been proactive and reactive to social injustices and in helping the people of Scotland in their time of need. £500,000 was secured for the people of Blanefield to (as John Swinney said) ‘help them get on with their lives’. We implore you to find the funding to allow the owners of the flat-roofed homes to get the necessary repairs on their properties and get on with their lives too!
