Designate Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow as Scheduled Monument #SaveGovanDocks

The Issue

Govan Graving Docks is the only remaining major dock complex on the Upper Clyde that has not been filled in to make way for modern developments.

Although the site is Grade-A listed it would appear that this may not afford adequate protection from the prospect of major redevelopment that would alter its historic character. Furthermore the petition organiser is of the opinion that Glasgow City Council may not be fully committed to the protection of this historic site and that the Scottish Government must intervene to protect it from further deterioration or extensive redevelopment.

There is a parallel petition for the site to be restored as a heritage park however such a development faces a number of financial and technical hurdles. The interim priority must be to secure the site against further deterioration and to preclude the possibility of commercial development (something the local community in Govan appears to be strongly against) until it's future can be properly and carefully considered.

The Scottish Canals network is already designated as a Scheduled Monument and the Tinkers' Heart above Loch Fyne is under consideration. Govan Graving Docks is arguably an equally important part of Scotland's heritage.
