Call on The Scottish Government to recognise the scale of emergency at Capital Theatres
Why this petition matters
Support Capital Theatres to ensure our wonderful venues can safely re-open for everyone to enjoy live performance again in Spring 2021!
We are campaigning to prevent the closure of our theatres, and to continue making a difference through the arts with our wider community, engaging in our longstanding learning and participation activities.
Capital Theatres is asking for Government intervention to ensure our three city centre venues in Edinburgh (Festival Theatre, King's Theatre, and The Studio) can re-open when it is safe to do so, ensuring continued access to culture for our most vulnerable communities during COVID-19.
As Scotland's largest theatre charity organisation, we strive to make the arts accessible for all, delivering significant health and wellbeing benefits. During this difficult time, we have continued to engage with the wider community online offering wide-ranging opportunities for people to engage with the arts safely from home - everything from dementia friendly music concerts, to storytelling projects with Special Needs Schools and performance workshops with care experienced young adults. During June and July alone, we engaged with over 600 people each week through our digital activities.
Our theatres are under serious threat without adequate emergency funding from the Scottish Government, at the same level as other publicly supported theatres. We must continue to play our part in Edinburgh's year-round thriving arts scene in support of Edinburgh and Scotland's local and national economy.
At our core we work tirelessly to inspire a lifelong love of theatre, to be a leading national cultural destination and to be a creative hub and magnet for artistic talent. We welcome 500,000 visitors, engage with 26,000 community participants each year and employ 230 dedicated staff.
The King's Theatre in Tollcross is at the heart of Edinburgh's cultural community, delighting over 90,000 people at Scotland's largest and most successful pantomime, the 'old lady of Leven Street' is truly Edinburgh's best loved people's theatre.
The Festival Theatre is home to our National Performing Companies, including Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera, and our venues are integral to Edinburgh's Festivals, including The Edinburgh International Festival, The Jazz and Blues Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Our reach is wide and our impact great; until the advent of this tragic lobal pandemic, we were a successful and resilient charity, but without financial support now there is a very real chance that our theatres may close, and close for good.
We cannot let this happen. We need you to help us demonstrate to the government that Capital Theatres is worth equal investment to our theatre compatriots, to save our iconic venues before it's too late. Please sign if you agree with us and want to be part of the movement to help the Festival Theatre, the King’s Theatre and The Studio in Edinburgh remain viable for the long term, playing our key role in the economic and cultural recovery from Covid-19.
