KGS and BVA should start school at 8:30 to prevent sleep deprivation

The Issue

Sleep research suggests that a teenager needs between eight and 10 hours of sleep every night. Most teenagers only get about 6.5-7.5 hours sleep per night. Teen's body clocks naturally shift to make them feel tired later in the evening, but early school starts do not enable them to sleep in the mornings.

On top of this, the paragraph below clarifies that hormonal changes in teens makes them naturally feel sleepy later at night:

This change in the circadian rhythm seems to be due to the fact that the brain hormone melatonin is produced later at night in teens than it is for kids and adults. So, teenagers have a harder time falling asleep. Sometimes this delay in the sleep–wake cycle is so severe that it affects a teen's daily activities

in some cases, even if teens wish to sleep earlier at night, tuitions, homework, assignments, projects and other activities force them to sleep later in the night.

But the problem doesn’t end here, sleep deprivation causes serious issues like:

  • Heart disease.
  • Heart attack.
  • Heart failure.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Mental health problems
  • Depression

To conclude, schools around the world have already been taking a step towards helping the students by changing school timings to 8:30am and have seen positive results like happier more alert students so let’s be the first school in Karachi to bring about this positive change!
