A CHILDREN-ONLY emergency accommodation service in Dublin is set to close in the new year. This is a directive from Tusla and The Salvation Army.  Over 40 staff are set to lose their positions due to this closure. There are two services that are provided under the umbrella of Lefroy House,  Nightlight 24hr service and Support Flats which cater to young adult leaving the care system live independently.

Nightlight 24 hrs is an emergency accommodation service for under 18s. The vulnerable young people are referred from Tusla, when no other service is available to them. There are 7 emergency beds that the young person can access for up to two weeks, it has been a 24-hr service since 2019 and the team provides support to young people by engaging in key work and activities that cater to the young person’s needs.  The team (social care workers) also advocate on behalf of the young person by accessing meetings with relavent professionals, schools to promote young people's education and access family meetings. This vital support is lifesaving to the young people who are in crisis. Through this support the young people feel they have someone on their side to tell their story. The team at Nightlight work with a multi-disciplinary team who engage with the Child Protection Garda Unit at Store St. Station. Social workers, youth workers, and  probation officers. If Nightlight closes who will support our most vulnerable. Don't let them close this much need service.

Support flats is an accommodation service that houses young people who have come through the care system. This service is extremely important to prevent young people from going into adult homelessness and being lost in the system. The team at support flats provide a  service that supports the young people through key working that is specific to the young person needs and advocating on their behalf  for other services this could be education, job search, court services or funding. Support flats also give the young adults the opportunity to learn how to live independently with the support of 24hr staffing. Staff here teach life skills which include cooking, cleaning, and most importantly budgeting. Staff work with the young people to source housing after their time in the support flats comes to an end. The service is paramount to the young people who lives here at Lefroy House.

This is contributing to the homeless crisis in Ireland, it is also contributing to the rising unemployment situation under the current situation of covid 19 Pandemic. If Lefroy house is closed it will be detrimental to a young person’s life. There is no other service in Ireland like Lefroy House.
