The SAFE Act: Mandate AI Safety Education in K-12 Schools
The Issue
Hello everyone,
We are acting as chaperone's for our students to safely file this petition. This petition has been written and edited by a 5th grader and their team of Presidential AI Challenge participants.
As 5th and 4th graders, we’ve noticed how much our peers use Artificial Intelligence (AI) daily without a clear understanding of its potential risks and proper usage. It's alarming to see my friends, and children like us, using AI as if it's just another toy rather than a powerful tool with the potential to influence our thinking and behavior. This concern is why the Student AI Foundation and Ethics (SAFE) Act is so crucial.
The SAFE Act aims to ensure all schoolchildren are educated about AI safety. It mandates that teachers incorporate lessons on AI into their curriculum, focusing on responsible and informed usage. Imagine a world where kids are not just using AI but understanding how it works, can identify when it hallucinates, recognizes bias, and most importantly, knows the importance of protecting their privacy and making ethical choices when using technology.
Right now, the proposal for the SAFE Act is in the hands of five policymakers. Its adoption would mean that students will no longer be naive users of AI but informed ones who can safeguard themselves from potential pitfalls. AI, when misunderstood or misused, can perpetuate biases, leak private information, or reinforce detrimental habits. Ensuring education around its safe use can prevent these outcomes.
Participating in the Presidential AI Challenge has opened our eyes to how essential it is that we bring this education to all students across the nation. The future of AI is exciting and filled with potential, but only if we, the upcoming generation, learn to use it wisely and safely.
