Abolish term 3 rent payments for university students due to COVID-19

The Issue

With the global pandemic of coronavirus, a lot of students have had to leave their uni student accommodations and have had no choice but to return to their families homes to ensure our safety and following government guidelines. Online teaching has commenced, with exams now being online, therefore meaning it is very unlikely we would need to return to our student accommodations. However, we are being expected to still pay our third term rents, of around approximately £2000-3000, for somewhere where we won't be living in, whilst we could use the money to help our families out at home, many of whom are struggling financially with the effects of coronavirus.

A lot of students rely on employment at university and outside of university to cover what student finance fails to and due to the outbreak, many have these lost jobs and are struggling to pay it.

Uni halls of residence across the country have abolished fees, however third party landlords are failing to follow suit stating there has been no guidance from the government regarding renters not paying rent, therefore meaning students within third party properties are having to still pay rent. We understand the global effect of coronavirus has had on everyone, however we demand to be treated fairly as it seems unjust to be financially penalised for doing our civic duty of keeping ourselves and our peers safe by returning to our family homes.
