I have seen many petitions asking for 'Halal' meat slaughter be banned in the UK.

I believe this is wrong for the following reasons:

1. According to a 2015 FSA report only 2% of cattle, 15% of sheep and goats and 3% of poultry were killed without pre stunning.

2.84% of animals slaughtered by the Halal method were stunned first.

3. Although only a small percentage other European countries who have already banned religious slaughter have had negative impacts, in particular to beef farmers, in the UK.  My husband and I have experienced this.

4. In todays modern multi-cultural society I believe segregating a part of society is not the way forward.

I believe as many do that when people from other cultures and countries come to call Britain home, that they should make every effort to 'fit in'

However the main part of religious killing is  a prayer that is said to the animal. Some believe the animal should be alive to hear this as detailed below:   

 'Although there are differences in the way
animals are slaughtered by the Shechita
(Jewish) and Halal (Muslim) methods, both
involve cutting the animal’s throat with a very
sharp knife, in many cases without any form of
stunning.'

'Within both Jewish and Muslim communities,
there are different interpretations of the
religious laws. Leaders of some liberal
branches of the Jewish faith are prepared to
interpret Jewish law in the light of modern
customs and knowledge, but others are not'

I see no need to ban something which is obviously important to these peoples beliefs but as a  country with very High animal Welfare standards I believe a law, ensuring all animals for religious slaughter in the UK are brought into line with our laws by stunning first, is enough.
