The Return of the Bnei Anousim Symposium

Plan of Action

We the undersigned humbly petition the Rabbis who are part of the Plan of Actions Committee, the Chief Rabbi of the Rabbinate of Israel, and the Sefardi Chief Rabbi of Israel to adopt the following plan of action, participate in it and make rulings relating to it:

We, pledge to work towards the fulfilment of the following actions in regard to the descendants of Spanish and Portuguese Jewish communities (otherwise known as Anousim, Conversos, Crypto-Jews and Marranos).

1. To help spread awareness of the phenomena of these descendants who wish to reconnect with the Jewish community. To ensure that we show understanding and tolerance to those individuals who seek us out and help them achieve their goals with patience and understanding.
2. For those who wish to return formally to the Jewish People, whether through a full conversion, Giyur LeHumra/Misafek or the Return Ceremony devised by the Rashbash, we should acknowledge their Jewish ancestry. The status of Bene Anousim has long been discussed in Halachic (Jewish legal) literature and most rabbis throughout the ages, including the Rambam, Abravanel, Shulchan Aruch, Rav Soloveichik and Rav Ovadia Yosef, while they may disagree on how they return, each acknowledge their special status and that they are not to be considered non-Jews. We hope that an accepting Universal ruling could be made to call the Bnei Anousim “Returnees” rather than ”Converts” regardless of which process they undertake. This recognises the Jewish ancestry of the person who needs to bring some form of family research evidence of their lineage.
3. For those who wish to reconnect with their ancestry, it is important to help them learn about Sephardi History, Culture and Traditions. These are the traditions of their ancestors who were forcibly disconnected from their people and customs, and it is important for those who seek to reconnect be given the opportunity to learn and explore what was lost or stolen from them. It is also important to maintain these Sephardi Customs which in many cases families were kept for centuries even with the fear of discovery, torture and death. These are the customs that accompanied their families and are a part of the reason for the return.
4. To help the Jewish world approach these phenomena as an unprecedented opportunity to rectify a historic wrong and a halachic and moral mandate. In addition, to assist as many global Jewish organisations and institutions understand the issue and place it on their ongoing agenda, so it will become one of the primary issues on the global Jewish agenda.

The above proposal was made by Shiloh Miriam the organiser of The Return of the Bnei Anousim Symposium before and during Day 2 of the Symposium to the Rabbis and Ashley Perry the speakers participating on that Day. Shiloh is a Jewish descendant of the Portuguese Anousim and a successful Returnee and as someone that navigated the emotional journey of Return and all that entails, she wishes to bring awareness of this phenomenon of Bnei Anousim of Portugal & Spain returning to their Jewish family.

This Petition is an expression of interest from all of us, the final decision of the final agreement will be decided ONLY by the rabbis of the committee who will study each point of this petition according to Halakha.
