Regan was my brother. His name is at the heart of this campaign because his death changed my life forever. When Regan died unexpectedly in Thailand on January the 3rd 2025, our family was plunged into a sea of grief and confusion. Like many families in similar situations, we were left to navigate unfamiliar and often overwhelming systems, desperate to find the answers and support we needed.

In the midst of the trauma, we found ourselves repeatedly chasing the fcdo for updates, with no clear guidance on what processes would follow Regan’s death. Communication was sporadic and inconsistent, an points of contacts were changed without notification, and on some occasions appointed people wernt available, i was having to send emails an waiting days for a reply, leaving us in limbo during the most painful time of our lives. This is a reality faced by countless British families when a loved one dies abroad.

When I returned to the UK, I felt completely unsupported. It felt like I had been left to deal with everything alone. No one called to check in, no one asked how I was coping after my world fell apart— not just losing my brother, but losing him thousands of miles from home.

The Government website provides guidance on what to do when someone dies abroad. I believe this guidance needs to be reviewed. It also provides a list of lawyers. This list should be independently verified and regularly reviewed, so bereaved families can have confidence in the professionals they are directed towards.

Families need more than information on a webpage. They need real people & compassionate support when their world has fallen apart.

I am calling on the UK Government and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to make changes that will prevent other families from experiencing the same distress. We need a dedicated point of contact or liaison officer to provide timely updates and clarify steps in the process following a death abroad. Families should not be left in the dark while managing logistics and legalities during an already devastating period.

Moreover, there is a pressing need for clearer communication and guidance. Families need tailored support for such a traumatic experience and be given a comprehensive roadmap of the next steps — from repatriation to dealing with foreign legal systems. Such information should be readily accessible and straightforward, empowering bereaved families to make informed decisions.

In addition, transparency and accountability in the support and investigations provided by UK authorities must improve. Families should have clear avenues to raise concerns and understand the process surrounding the investigation of their loved one's death abroad. They deserve to know that their cases are being managed with the utmost care compassion & diligence.

This call to action is not just about my brother Regan; it is about all British families who face the tragic loss of a loved one overseas. We demand changes to ensure every family receives the support they need during their darkest hours.
