Sign An Open Letter to The Queen to Act on the CEE
The Issue
For all concerned women to sign:
From the women of XR, demanding action on the Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE)
Saturday, 19 June 2021
For the attention of:
Her Majesty, the Queen
And all the women of the royal household.
We are writing to you to share and ask.
We are a group of women, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, siblings and aunts who are terrified for people across the world who are losing their lives due to the climate and ecological crisis.
The world is in a state of emergency, we are living in a time of multiple crises: health, poverty, racism, collapsing ecosystems and the mass extinction of life.
We are asking that you, perhaps the most privileged women alive in the UK right now, use your privilege to protect the lives of all who hold you as their head of state and in turn all life on Earth.
We have seen the royal response to the Covid-19 pandemic and urge you to respond to climate and ecological breakdown with equal urgency.
Ordinary UK citizens are being led down a path to death in a blindfold. Your Majesty, you have the platform and presence to change this for your country, its citizens and for the world.
Scientists unanimously agree we are in a state of a climate and ecological emergency (CEE), with Sir James Bevan, the head of the Government's own Environment Agency, saying in February this year that the UK is already seeing the “worst case scenarios” of climate breakdown.
“Much higher sea levels will take out most of the world’s cities, displace millions, and make much of the rest of our land surface uninhabitable or unusable ... Much more extreme weather will kill more people through drought, flooding, wildfires and heat waves than most wars have.” ~ Sir James Bevan
We have the solutions to save this planet. All that is missing is public awareness and political will, to which you hold the key.
We ask that you:
1. Make an emergency public speech addressing the House of Lords, House of Commons, the British public, all commonwealth countries, and other nations of the world. We need urgent action today to address the climate and ecological emergency. This means no more hollow words and broken promises.
2. Use your influence to warn the Prime Minister face-to-face. Urge him to take immediate action on the CEE. Persuade him to implement a UK-wide citizens' assembly on climate and ecological justice to ensure the fair and rapid transition we need right now to avoid complete catastrophe. The government has proven time and time again it does not understand the extreme urgency of the crisis, it is not interested in a just transition to a sustainable economy, it does not care about social justice for the people in this country nor for those living on the other side of the world who are impacted by the decisions we make here. It is therefore essential that ordinary citizens, with the support of experts, stakeholders, and people with lived experiences of the CEE, come together to find the solutions that are appropriately radical and just.
3. Refuse to grant royal assent to any parliamentary bills that will cause harm to people and planet. This would include, but would not be limited to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill (2021), which will restrict our democratic right to protest government inaction. This also includes the inadequate Environment Bill which is delayed again and will, as it currently stands, put the UK's environment at risk of further destruction and degradation - something we cannot afford at this perilous point in time.
We urge that you take the above steps to ensure the safety of your own family, that of all of the families you represent in the United Kingdom and our global family across the world.
We have the honour to remain, Madam, your Majesty’s most humble and (dis)obedient subjects,
The Women of XR
