Ask Perth & Kinross Council to consult before removing the hands-free traffic light system
The Issue
Please join us to ask Perth & Kinross Council to leave the hands-free traffic light system in place till they have consulted users.
The system was installed to protect pedestrians against transmission of the Covid-19 virus during the pandemic.
The proposal to remove the system is without consultation and to the “delight” of a Ward Councillor who also believes that removing a hands-free system will benefit pedestrians by "reducing air pollution!”
If you’ve benefitted from using a hands-free system, and believe that it will be even more important as the number of virus cases escalates, please sign this petition.
Letters to the local press reported the advantages of the hands-free system for families and individuals in reducing the risk of catching Covid and having repeatedly to sanitise hands after pressing the button at traffic lights.
Importantly, other groups such as the disabled also benefitted.
· Blind and partially sighted people no longer had to find the button first before pushing it
· those in wheelchairs no longer had to manoeuvre into place to reach the button.
Although there were teething problems with the hands-free system, these were quickly identified and being addressed.
The solution to dealing with these problems is to improve the system for all, and not dispense with it completely.
If you're concerned about protecting people in a public health emergency please sign the petition.
If you're concerned that consultation is a requirement for all decisions affecting the public domain, you should definitely join us and sign the petition.
PERTH & KINROSS COUNCIL - PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE RECENTLY INSTALLED HANDS-FREE TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM
