Fraser Anning remains in parliament but in just over 2 weeks, we have the chance to make sure he is not re-elected.
This election, it is imperative that we Australians push back against the creep of far right sentiment - the bigotry, insularity, toxic nationalism and cruelty which has crept into political discourse.
To ensure we keep our country safe for everyone, regardless of race or religion (or lack thereof), we must oppose those parties which trade on fear and discrimination. Some parties have names which do not reflect their far-right agenda. Many of the listed right wing parties are also anti-Semitic, homophobic and oppose female emancipation and equality.
Parties with hard right wing policy:
Fraser Anning’s Conservative Nationals party
One Nation
Australian Liberty Alliance
Australia First
Love Australia or Leave
Rise up Australia
On the other hand, we have the opportunity to vote in politicians who are progressive and who represent the equality, diversity and compassion valued by most Australians. These parties include:
The Greens
Animal Justice Party
The Labor party has more progressive social justice policies than the coalition. It is also relevant to note that the Liberal party has a preference deal with Clive Palmer’s United Australia party, and the National party will preference One Nation over Labor in some seats. In some states, the final senate position will be a fight between The Greens and One Nation, which is a sobering prospect.
Your vote counts - consider voting for candidates who will promote a progressive, inclusive Australia.
I’m voting for the Greens, and I’m voting for Senator Mehreen Faruqi who accepted and tabled this record breaking petition. Whoever you vote for, let’s make equality, tolerance and peaceful multiculturalism a bipartisan issue.
