Stop barbaric shooting of thousands of endemic flying foxes of Mauritius
The Issue
Dear friends,
The prime minister has been labeling the shooting in France yesterday as "savage and barbaric". Yet the recent decision the government Mauritius to get rid of 18,000 flying foxes (locally called chauve-souris) by shooting them down is no less savage and barbaric apart from being useless and avoidable.
Mauritius is building a country's reputation of barbaric treatment to animals.
A recent announcement was made that millions of rupees would be donated to kill stray dogs instead of investing in sterilization as the killing of dogs which is as ineffective as it is inhuman .and cruel.
A few weeks back. A petition to curb the gruesome lucrative Monkey trade on the island has already reached 40,000 signatures. Mrs Gandhi has even been calling for a boycott of the island as a tourists destination.
Today we are calling for the Government of Mauritius to STOP these savage and barbaric killings of this endemic species that is the flying-foxes or locally known as the Chauve-Souris.
Even the National Geographic has made a damning article regarding this species with the reasons it should NOT be killed:
"Opinion: Killing Thousands of Flying Foxes Only Hurts the Environment" [1]
Namely:
1) The flying fox is still vulnerable.
2) Bats aren't evil.
3) It's inhumane.
4) It goes against science.
5) Bats help forests.
It is now important to send a clear message to this Government by local people and international community alike that we will not tolerate further violations of innocent, endangered specie. That the time for them to annul this decision is NOW.
