The proposal of the law to criminalize domestic violence in Armenia

Dear Mr. Prime Minister,

We have been carefully following the recent discourse taking place in Armenia surrounding the proposal of the law to criminalize domestic violence. It is encouraging to learn that the Minister of Justice is seriously considering the passage of such a law, which is well overdue.

As Diasporan Armenians, we want to see our country moving  toward establishment of laws which creates equality for everyone and respects Human Rights. As you are aware, many groups in Armenia and the Diaspora are working tirelessly to raise money, donate resources, time and energy to help Armenia in any way possible. We do this because we believe in the future of our country, in a civil society where human rights are respected, where women have the same economic opportunities as men and are treated with dignity.  We would like to see the law go as far as not only criminalizing domestic violence, but to see the law containing punitive measures.

As Diasporan Armenians we believe the time has come to face these difficult issues face on and to deal with them in a way that will truly create change in our country. We would like to see swift action taken on behalf of the Armenian government to pass this law and begin the process of creating civic change that is much needed; which will enable us to be taken seriously on the international stage.

Thank you for your time and for your leadership on this important issue for all Armenians.
