Change in how we address homelessness.

The issue

To Mr Abbott,

We believe that for a country as wealthy as ours, it is not acceptable to have a homeless count of more than 100,000. This does not represent the Australia that we want to see.  Where is your compassion for those who are struggling in our society? Where do your values lie in holding up your obligations to the United Nations?  Homelessness is a crack in the footpath of society that most people walk over and ignore. Your role as our elected Prime Minister is to prevent this from happening, yet vital funding has been cut to support those in danger of losing their homes or already homeless. The support that is available is not sufficiently addressing the issue. This is a violation of our fellow Australians Human Right to an adequate standard of living, including housing, health and wellbeing.

That’s why we the undersigned demand to see CHANGE!

  • Change in the power of the Human Rights Commission for this Government to adhere to our obligation to the United Nations! We want our own Bill of Rights.
  •  Change in the way we treat our First Nations people! We have said sorry, but it’s not good enough. Words are worthless without action. It’s time to start SHOWING we are sorry.
  •  Change in the Taxation System! Reform is needed for big companies to start paying the taxes that could afford the solutions to many of our issues in addressing homelessness.
  • Change to the welfare system! Support services need to take a holistic approach when addressing the issue of homelessness. This includes mental health, domestic violence & rehabilitation.
  • Change in the public housing sector! Stop selling off public housing and invest the money that is needed to provide those in need of the adequate housing they are inherently entitled to because they are human, just like you and me.
