As we approach Remembrance Sunday, let’s remember the pigeon heroes of war, like GI Joe.
GI Joe was a pigeon during the Second World War. He flew with a vital message attached to his leg, and thereby saved an entire town in Italy from being bombed. He was later awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for his bravery. The book, Pigeon Hero! (Ready-To-Read: Level 2) - By Shirley Redmond, tells the true story of GI Joe. It is beautifully illustrated and children love to read it.
Pigeons saved thousands of lives during both World Wars and 32 of them won the PDSA Dickin Medal for their outstanding wartime service. Few people realise this. Today, the spiteful media campaign against pigeons, our forgotten heroes of war, had led to cruelty to these fantastic birds.
Pigeons and seagulls are beautiful. They are not ours to abuse and persecute. Let’s show them kindness and respect.
The aim of this petition is to stop the abuse of pigeons and seagulls, so that it becomes something that nobody does any longer.
This petition currently has 16,290 signatures. Let’s aim for 25,000. Please sign and share it far and wide. The link is below.
Pigeons, seagulls and all wild birds are “protected” by the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, but this law is not enforced, so the abuse continues.
This petition receives “the silent treatment” from Government, or anyone with the power to stop the cruelty. Currently, nobody with the power to stop the abuse of pigeons and seagulls will stop it, but many voices, speaking out against the cruelty, must win in the end!
Please help, as follows -
