WILL OUR NEW PRIME MINISTER PROTECT PIGEONS?
Pigeon abuse is animal abuse.
People who abuse animals are potential human abusers. This should always be kept in mind if animal abusers are let off easily, or even ignored.
Let’s get cruelty to pigeons stopped, before it leads to further cruelty towards animals and people.
Why will nobody who has the power to stop the abuse of pigeons take any action to stop it?
All wild birds, including pigeons, are “protected” by law from abuse under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, as amended.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, it is an offence to kill, injure or take any wild bird; take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird (while that nest is in use or being built); and take or destroy an egg of any wild bird.
Anyone witnessing stoning/kicking etc of pigeons should call the RSPCA Advice Control centre on 0300 1234 999.
Defra says that anyone who believes that a wildlife crime has been, or is being committed, should report the matter to the police. If the crime is in progress, they should call 999. If the crime has already happened, they should call 101. Crimes can also be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/

The Wildlife and Countryside Act is clearly not being enforced.
You would never know that pigeon abuse is illegal, judging by the hatred and prejudice, cruelty and abuse directed at these innocent birds!
It is vital that the next Prime Minister enforces the Wildlife and Countryside Act to give pigeons full and effective protection from abuse under the law.
Humane Society International are asking people to write to Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, to request that they promote animal welfare, should they become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. HSI have supplied a template email which can be amended to reflect people’s own concerns about animal welfare. See link below.

Dear Rishi Sunak and Elizabeth Truss,
Stop the persecution of pigeons by enforcing the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If you become Prime Minister, please ensure that pigeons are given the protection they so desperately need, by enforcing the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offence to harm any wild bird, including pigeons.
Pigeons today are kicked, chased and persecuted, often by children, encouraged by adults. Some pigeons are even stoned to death. This is absolutely disgraceful in our Nation Of Animal Lovers. It makes parks and public places threatening and unsafe, and anyone who defends pigeons risks their own personal safety. I was abused in a London park for defending a pigeon. It was terrifying.
Pigeon abuse is illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981, which “protects” all wild birds, including pigeons, and makes it an offence to injure or harm them, yet who would know this? Pigeons today are openly persecuted, just for existing. The law must be enforced to protect them.
Pigeons saved thousands of human lives during both World Wars, as messengers. They pose no risk to health, but have been persecuted ever since 2001, when Ken Livingstone, a pigeon hater, declared war on pigeons and spread false rumours about them being disease carriers. Vets and the RSPB confirm that pigeons are no risk to human health, as follows:-
“It is absolute nonsense … to suggest that pigeons present a health hazard and presumably need eliminating for the well-being of the nation’s health.” David A Palmer, BVSc, MRCVS
“There is no evidence to show that they spread disease.” Mike Everett, RSPB
Pigeon abuse is animal abuse. It leads to further abuse of animals and people. It needs to stop.
My Petition, to “Protect pigeons, and people who defend them, from abuse in parks and public places, by law”, was addressed to Boris Johnson and submitted to him many times. He did not reply.

There is no need to abuse pigeons. It is cruel, offensive and unnecessary.
Please effectively protect pigeons, and people who defend them, from abuse by enforcing the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981.

It is time for the authorities to stop turning a blind eye to pigeon abuse. Pigeons deserve a good life, just like every other living creature.
We cannot call ourselves a Nation Of Animal Lovers until the abuse of pigeons has been eradicated from our land.
