This ritual makes no sense and lacks compassion. Turkeys have done nothing needing pardon, nor deserving death. "Pardoning" one turkey while condoning the slaughter of millions of others for a holiday feast is an outdated, cruel ritual, now that we know what we do about factory farms. Ask the president to pardon all turkeys and have a plant-based Thanksgiving feast at the White House instead!

Letter to
The White House The President of The United States
Dear Mr. President:

I'm writing to ask you to please stop the White House Turkey Pardon in 2012. This outdated ritual makes no sense and lacks compassion. Turkeys have done nothing needing pardon, nor deserving death. "Pardoning" one turkey while condoning the slaughter of millions of others for a holiday feast is a cruel tradition, and one whose time has passed.

We know now about factory farms -- how animals such as turkeys are horribly mistreated (debeaked, de-toed, with no anesthesia), as well as the massive pollution these operations cause. We also know how unhealthy these artificially fattened, hormone- and antibiotic-laden birds are for humans to eat. (And that even "free range" and organic turkeys are artificially fattened and slaughtered at a mere 18 months old.)

In short, there is no good reason to continue this ritual, which callously ridicules a living being and condones a practice that is unhealthy, non-compassionate and environmentally harmful.

Please, instead, send a healthier, kinder message this year: pardon all turkeys, start a new tradition and have a plant-based Thanksgiving feast at the White House for the first time in history!
