Refunds for delayed flights to and from NAIA
The Issue
Flying domestic to and from Manila's NINOY AQUINO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is beset with regular delays that disrupt the lives of full-fare paying passengers. It is now common to expect 2-3 hour delays in boarding and an additional 1 hour delay sitting on the tarmac awaiting take off. Regardless of airline, time, day or season these delays are now the rule and hardly ever an exception. People miss connecting flights, blow meetings, spend on overpriced food and beverages sold in terminals and are forced to take more expensive transport options upon arriving late.
It has been said that it is "cheaper to make passengers wait than address the issues head on." What are the issues? Too many passengers result in too many flights on too few planes landing on even fewer runways on airports outfited only for short haul aircraft that carry less passengers. It's an aircraft capacity and runway deficit.
As we wait for new airports to be built and terminals and airlines to equip themselves for bigger planes, the public increasingly suffers by losing time, opportunities and real money to delays that are getting worse by the day.
Isn't it time that the government step in and compensate inconvenienced helpless domestic travellers by refunding 50% of air fares for flight delays over two hours long caused by overcongested runways and callous and impersonal airline and airport policies?
