Just for Nirbhaya Limit number of curative petitions and mercy petitions for rapists
The Issue
Help Nirbhaya! Sign to limit the number of curative petitions and mercy pleas for rapists #ChopTheirTools
On the bone-chilling night of December, she was found wrapped in blood (ONLY), on the roads of the capital of the world's largest democracy. She could live for only two weeks after this incident. Barely able to breathe after being gang-raped by 5 men, assaulted with a rod and thrown on road, bleeding from almost every organ. It's been more than 7 traumatising years, and more than 6 years when her rapists were found guilty. Her family received support from across India and overseas. Thousands marched with them holding candles in their hands, but after 7 years only a handful of them are still marching. Her rapists having been issued death warrant 3 times, they successfully managed to get away with two before and plan to do the same this time too. The laws are meant to punish the guilty and serve justice to people. But in this case, it has become a tool of criminals to abuse law and the victim's family wanting justice. If this continues, it will not only torture Nirbhaya's family stuck in this traumatic loop. However, it will also become a loophole for criminals to escape from punishment. A licence to gang-rape, because they cannot be hanged separately and have unlimited mercy petitions to file, which they will file and keep raping the law and order!
We cannot chop off the tools with which they raped Nirbhaya, but we can #ChopTheirTools with which they're abusing the law and order. The convicts exercise their human rights. They retain right to file curative petitions and mercy pleas but it shouldn't be allowed to become hurdles in justice delivery. Therefore, the number of petitions should be limited. To prevent exploitation of law and also to make sure the laws meant to protect the victims aren't used as a tool to abuse them.
