French bulldog tied to car and dragged to death by sick thugs
We MUST get the British government to bring in much tighter penalties in response to the level of cruelty being meted out to the animals in our society.
It is no longer acceptable to treat the sort or acts of violence, as illustrate in the Express Newspaper's report of the horrific crime committed again the French Bulldog in Bootle, Merseyside, as less serious than if it was against a small child.
If this had been done to a child, there would have been, and quite rightly, a public outcry of rage, the perpetrators hunted down, debates in parliament and blanket coverage on the news.
But where is all of this for that little dog? Who cares enough to bring in stiffer penalties?
Currently six months is what this crime would get. The new Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill will mean that people who hurt animals 'could' face up to five years in jail.
I would like to propose the following upgrades to the current law and ammendments to the draft currently before parliament.
The the event of conviction of a cruelty offense. 1) The prison term should be a minimum of of 5 years with no maximum 2) There should be the option for accompanying fines to the prison term 3) There should be a mandatory life time ban on the possession of an animal (And that means that NO animal maybe kept in the dwelling occupied by the convicted individual) 4) There should be a national register of those convicted of a crime of animal cruelty or neglect.(Similar to the sex offenders register)
There is the Child Cruelty (Sentences) Bill 2017-19 before parliament which seeks to raise the punishment for child cruelty from anywhere up to 'life in prison'. This represents society's outrage of the despicable treatment of the silent and most vulnerable and defenceless individuals in our community.
But what about the 'other' silent, vulnerable and most defenceless part of our community? Our animals.
Society has changed radically over the years and our pets have become family members and they should have the same level of protection. The wild animals, native to our shores too, deserve equal protection from our uncontrolled actions.
Some will say that this is trying to put animals on the same level of legal importance as humans. This is not the case. It merely serves to clearly state our level of commitment to the duty of care to our animals and it also serves to illustrate our abhorrence and zero tollerance of the violent crimes committed against those who can not defend themselves and who look to us for justice.
This will send a clear message to the dog fighters, illegal breeders and rogue individuals, who take pleasure in hurting our animals.
It will cost us nothing to bring in even stiffer penalties in response to violence to animals. It will only cost those who perpetrate these acts.
Please let's make parliament do something truly inspiring and let's bring in some equality to our animal rights. Let's do something for that poor 'Frenchie'
