Stop breeding and selling puppies and offer space for shelter animals up for adoption.

With millions of unwanted dogs of all breeds being killed every year in animal shelters, there is simply no reason for these animals to be bred and sold for the pet-store trade. Buying animals in pet stores supports a cruel industry. Most animals sold in pet stores come from mass-breeding facilities called puppy mills, where they are denied socialization, exercise, and veterinary care. The puppies are typically taken from their mothers at an early age, packed into crates, and trucked or flown hundreds of miles to brokers and then to pet stores, often without adequate food, water, or ventilation. Some puppies don't survive the grueling journey. Breeders, brokers, and pet stores ensure maximum profits by not spending money for these vital necessities. The breeding dogs never leave their cages, nor do they get to play with each other, their only interaction is to mate. The parents are kept in tiny filthy cages, often stacked on on top of the other with only enough room to stand and turn around, they are bred from the time they are old enough and their necks are broken when they can no longer produce. They are not socialized, handled, or loved.

Nearly every pet store purchase supports these kinds of breeders, no matter if the cages in the store are nice, or filthy. Deprived of regular, loving human contact, puppies bought at pet stores are notoriously difficult to socialize and train. Compounded by the fact that, unlike good animal shelters, most pet stores don't bother to screen potential animal adopters, this means that many animals who are purchased on a whim by unprepared people end up at animal shelters. Conditions at many pet stores are inadequate at best; at worst, they are outright abusive. Puppies are often kept in wire-bottomed cages. Without these stores, the financial incentive for puppy mills would disappear, and the suffering of animals would end.

Please adopt animals from your local animal shelter, where there are puppies and dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. Shelters receive new animals every day, so if you don’t find the perfect companion to match your lifestyle on your first visit, keep checking back. You can also visit http://www.petfinder.com/, a searchable online database featuring thousands of adoption candidates at animal shelters and rescue groups.

Let's ask "The Pet Zone" to stop breeding and selling puppies and offer space for shelter animals up for adoption.
