Until today I have considered it inappropriate to change our shared declaration in any way since it was first published over a year ago. But it now seems appropriate to update the first sentence to reflect that it has now been 250 years since we first declared the intention to form a new government based upon self-governance, equal justice, and the respect for every person's right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Since that time, we have continued to strive for the realization of our ideals.
We had a long way to go from the gross inequalities at the core of the nation at its start, inequalities that culminated in the upheaval of our Civil War and were followed by efforts to remove the stain of our original sin of slavery that continue to this day.
But until now we have at least stuck with our stated goal to achieve equal justice and support the nations that share our democratic values. Now after 250 years of this struggle, we have Donald Trump whose declared view is that these noble ambitions are for chumps, and whose methods, morals, and character are more aligned with our enemies than with the nations that share our democratic values. To add insult to injury, he is commemorating our 250-year struggle with his sick and costly desecration of our Capital.
There has got to be a limit. I am reminded of the Nina Simone song with the ringing line, "Mississippi God Damn!"
