As someone who grew up in the American public education system, I learned the names of all 50 states in the 5th grade.  I can successfully point out every state on a map.  However, something has never made sense to me about the way that those 50 states were named.

We're all familiar with North Dakota and South Dakota.  There is no regular "Dakota," and we've accepted this as a society.  We're also all familiar with North Carolina, and South Carolina, even though there is no regular "Carolina."  However, there is West Virginia, but then there's just Virginia.  Virginia fails to fall under the binary cardinal direction naming phenomenon that we've adopted here in the states, and I think that needs to change.  Why is Virginia the odd one out?  Does West Virginia not deserve to be partnered with an East Virginia?

That is why I believe that as a nation, we have the responsibility to make America right again.  I'm calling out to you, the people of this great nation, to sign this petition and let our government know that East Virginia deserves a chance.  Sign this petition, and make a difference.
