A day in Norway where we can work together to clean up our beautiful country.

The Issue

The reason is that the oceans are getting littered everyday and the impotance of acting now against ocean pollution is vital. If we dont do anything now our oceans will be lost and human lives may become extinct. Every hour 464 tons of garbage are thrown into the ocean worldwide. The garbage problem is getting worse. Sign your name to make a change.

Why

How do humans effect Ocean pollution?

Human’s effect ocean pollution by littering, spilling oil, mine waste, CO2 and acid rain. When humans litter, the garbage slides into the oceans where the fishes eat it. Humans eat the fish and the fish can contain garbage, so the humans are basically eating some garbage. Plastic attracts and gives away chemicals! So for example when we buy food which is packed in plastic the food that was in the package has absorbed the dangerous chemicals and we then store the chemicals in our body fat. People can’t get rid of the chemicals except for when a women gets a child she gives most of the chemicals to the first born child but has still got some chemicals in her body. So when we first have got the chemicals in our body we can never get rid of them again. (When there are oil spills in the oceans then the fishes and the sea creatures can die because they can get stuck in the oil because it’s sticky and poisonous and the sea creatures can die. It has the heavy metal phosphorus in it which is very dangerous.

What does pollution do to the fishing industry?

The pollution ruins the food chain, which can give people diseases and they can get poisoned by eating sea food just like dirty drinking water. The effect of water pollution is mixed and it depends on what chemicals are dumbed and in which location. Many water bodies (water bodies meaning like rivers, lake, and oceans) near cities and towns are mostly polluted. This is like this because by garbage dumbed and littered by people and dangerous chemical legally or illegally dumped by produced industries, health centers, and schools and shopping, markets. Then main problem is that water pollution is that it can kill animals that live under water like fishes, crabs, dolphins and more are usually lying on beaches killed by pollution on their habitats.

What effect does pollution have on the water cycle?

Water pollution effects water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles. The water cycle is the cycle of water moving up from the earth, into the atmosphere, and falling from the atmosphere to the earth. The sun provides all the energy for the water cycle by evaporating the water from the treetops and the oceans surfaces. Water from inland areas, evaporates in the grounds, and it finds its way to the ocean, and just runs off and travels to the oceans in liquid form. When water evaporates it comes back in the form of rain. As it falls, it can gather chemicals from the air, and become acid rain. This further pollutes water and its inhabitants, but water pollution does not exclusively affect the water cycle. This is mainly because when water evaporates, it leaves behind minerals, and even pollutants, and goes up as “clean” water.

What effects does plastic rubbish have on sea creatures and animals?

Eating the plastic:

When animals (birds and sea creatures) eat the plastic it can block their digestive system and they can die, either because it is poisonous or it fills their stomach so they can’t eat anymore. For example: Turtles often mistake plastic bags for their favourite food “jelly fish”. Another case recorded was a grey whale stranded in Seattle which had more than 20 plastic bags, jogging pants, tape, towels, surgery gloves and a golf ball in its stomach!

Getting poisoned:

The poison from the micro plastic (tiny plastic particles) goes into the animals fat and stays there. When a small animal gets eaten by a bigger animal, and then those animals get eaten by even bigger animals, then the animals at the top of the food chain become more and more poisoned. This is called bio magnification. So the biggest animals in the sea suffer really badly from this problem! These big animals already have problems to reproduce, which means that if this goes on these animals will become extinct.

Getting hurt:

Another problem is that the animals can get injured by the plastic pieces, or get tangled in a fishing rope. If they can’t get loose again, then they suffer from great pain and often die.

How does ocean pollution happen?

A common way that rubbish gets into the ocean is that it travels through storm drains and rivers. On beaches people often leave rubbish behind such as plastic bottles. Flooding can also catch rubbish and make it travel into the ocean. If people throw garbage on the streets and it begins to rain it follow the water into the ocean. When large groups of land get fertilized and it then rains allot of the fertilizer and pesticides go into the rivers and lakes which then go into the oceans. Eighty percent of the pollution to the oceans come from land!
