STOP THE "CALVING CORNER" EXHIBIT AT THE PENNSYLVANIA FARM SHOW

STOP THE "CALVING CORNER" EXHIBIT AT THE PENNSYLVANIA FARM SHOW

The Issue

The 2018 Pennsylvania Farm Show is offering a new exhibit to it's visitors.  You can now watch a cow go through labor and deliver a calf right before your very eyes.  There is a penned in area for the cows that is surrounded by bleachers on three sides.  Hundreds of people can pack in and watch the miracle of birth.

I stumbled on this spectacle on the evening of January 10th.  I witnessed 4 Holstein cows in various stages of labor.  One in particular was clearly very uncomfortable.  Uncomfortable for obvious reasons but also because she was surrounded by a crowd of very loud strangers.  You could see the fear on her face.  It was (I'll say it again) LOUD, children ran through the area and were allowed to climb on the enclosure, adults talked uncessantly

There is absolutely no reason why a cow (or any animal for that matter) should be placed on display in such a way.

I strongly suggest that the welfare of these animals be taken into consideration for future Farm Shows by giving them a quiet, private area for them to labor and deliver and broadcasting the births by using cameras at all angles and showing it on a screen in another area.
