A 4-day-old baby from Orange County, Texas died after her skull and spine were allegedly cracked with forceps during delivery.
In 2013 Rachel Melancon and Allen Coats was expecting a perfectly healthy baby girl named Olivia Marie Coats. Olivia was born December 28th, 2013, but only lived a few days.
Baby Olivia from Texas died after her skull and spine were allegedly cracked with forceps during delivery.
Baby Olivia Marie died after spending her short life on life support.
Parents Rachel Melancon and Allen Coats held a funeral for their little girl on Saturday, January 4th, 2014.
Melancon, who stands at just 4-foot-11, and the father Allen had asked her doctor, George T. Backardjiev who works privately, but delivered Olivia at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas — for a cesarean section due to her small frame and the size of the baby.
But Backardjiev cautioned against this, saying that would leave her with a scar.
During a labor that lasted more than 18 hours, Olivia's heart rate increased, but still her mother and father was told to wait.
Backardjiev told Rachel and Allen, the baby was facing the wrong way and tried to turn Olivia Marie with his hands.
When this failed, Dr. Backardjiev used forceps.
Rachel and Allen stated "(Backardjiev) kept going and even put his foot up on the bed trying to pull, "When he touched the top and side of the skull, we heard a pop, like clay cracking in pottery and heard her skull crush."
Ironically, Rachel was then rushed off for an emergency cesarean. However, when baby Olivia (almost 8 pounds) was finally delivered, she was unable to breathe. She had suffered numerous fractures.
"I felt her pulled out of me and the room was silent. No crying baby and they told Allen to leave the room.
Instead of celebrating the new years on January 1st, 2014, the parents of Olivia had to make a decision that is every parent’s worst nightmare, that was to remove life support. Once Olivia was removed from life support, Olivia passed away at only days old.
Olivia’s family and a group of supports are asking for the help in passing a law they refer to as, “The Olivia Law.”
A petition is being circulated for “The Olivia Law.” If the law was to pass, the law would require every obstetrician (OB/GYN) to inform the expecting mother the risk of forceps that are used during delivery, either natural or caesarian. The law would force obstetricians to have to obtain written consent by the expectant mother or allow the mother the choice to decline the use of the tool during delivery.
The family of Olivia and her group of supporters are asking for your help in passing this law.
