Postpone Ohio State's Commencement To Be Held In-Person At A Later Date

Postpone Ohio State's Commencement To Be Held In-Person At A Later Date
The Issue
On March 17, 2020, President Drake sent an email out to Ohio State students regarding the decision to postpone spring commencement. He said it was premature to select a new date, but "our preference is to schedule for later this spring." In this same email, he highlighted how "commencement is one of our most cherished traditions, and we [Ohio State] remain fully committed to celebrating our graduates at an appropriate time."
As of April 3, 2020, Ohio State has announced that "the university will hold a historical virtual commencement on May 3." This announcement was posted online, without notifying Class of 2020 graduates first. While commencement will be virtual, there will be a "physical recognition event at a later date." This recognition date is not enough.
Graduation must be moved to a later, safer date in order to fully celebrate the spring Class of 2020, whether that is with the summer or fall graduates, or with another celebration all together. While we acknowledge not everyone will be able to attend, this still allows families a chance to celebrate together. At the time of the virtual commencement, there may still be a maximum requirement on gatherings, meaning extended families may not have the opportunity to watch together still.
Please sign this petition in support of The Ohio State University spring Class of 2020, who deserves to be recognized in a commencement at a safer and later date.
