Restore Steve Powel to the position of President of OCCA
The Issue
In last night’s board meeting, in a vote not previously up for consideration, four members of the board (Miguel Lopez, Cary Campo, Silvia Rial and Karina Bomrad) elected to remove Steve Powel from the presidency of The Ocean Club Community Association. The ostensible basis was that, because he had just moved his primary residence to a home on Key Biscayne, he would not be adequately in touch with the needs of the Club. They came to this conclusion despite Mr Powel’s retention of his existing unit in Ocean Tower Two, which he has temporarily leased, and his stated intention to purchase another unit there.
We strongly disagree with this decision, which we believe was prompted by personal grievances of those who voted him out despite the extraordinary effort and success Steve has brought to the Club during his presidency. There was no reflection on what was achieved or how his removal would benefit the Club. It was all personal.
Ignored was the fact that the club had endured a very difficult year due to Covid. This involved keeping owners safe and staff employed, helping manage the restaurants more efficiently, helping direct construction activity which beautified the Club, modernizing our accounting system, upgrading our promotional material and limiting disruptions. This involved many difficult decisions, but this was done in a manner which produced a $470,000 surplus for the Club and the securing of a $1,000,000 PPP loan from the government and its subsequent forgiveness.
Steve recently retired from a highly successful real estate financial services company and willingly committed his time to the Club, sometimes requiring forty hours a week. We were fortunate to have his services and the board’s decision would deprive us of his extraordinary abilities and knowledge.
It is vital that we reverse this unfortunate decision. Please sign this petition to urge our Voter Representatives to remove one or more of the board members who voted against Steve so that they can be replaced by other owners who place the Club’s well being over their own self interests. We need to restore Steve to his richly deserved position as president.
