Stop Shell from Arctic exploratory drilling

The Issue

The Obama administration has set a deadline for August 14th to decide on whether to grant the final drilling permits in the Arctic. We need to learn from our mistakes (devastating 2010 BP Oil Spill) and protect our environment for future generations. Black carbon and methane, potent greenhouses gases, will very likely be emitted in significant amounts, and drilling in the Arctic would be disastrous if a spill were to happen- a spill would be very difficult to contain and clean up because of ice flow and long darkness periods.  The result of future Arctic sea ice loss, could reduce two-thirds of the world's polar bear population within the next 30 years. We should be focusing our efforts on protecting the natural diversity of wildlife and fish populations within their natural Arctic habitats. Sea-ice loss that occurred in the Arctic between September 2006 and September 2007 equaled the total amount of ice lost during the previous 27 years.  We need to stand up to the Big Oil Companies and the House of Representatives who recently passed the Energy Production Act, H.R. 4480 which was specifically designed to increase oil and gas development, with measures that block necessary safeguards from smog and pollution and mandate drilling on public lands. They received a total of $38.6 million in oil and gas campaign cash or an average of $156,00 for their federal campaigns as a result of this act.   President Obama and administration we call on you to be true leaders and protect the Arctic, keep America safe and beautiful for our future generations. Please do what you know is right and stand up to the House of Representatives, Big Oil companies, and lobbyists that are making money on destroying our environment.
