In the present day Nigeria, annual rent payment has become an Herculean task for the citizenry, most especially those living in Lagos or other major cities. The Average Nigerian earns a monthly salary but is subjected to pay his rent for a year in advance. It becomes even more difficult when one is looking to move to a new apartment. You have to pay agency and agreement fees for 2years despite paying rent for just a year. This situation is ironical. Considering the fact that the majority of the Nigerian masses are low income earners. The government employs an average of 40% of the working population. For example, Mr. A earns a monthly salary of N50, 000. He is living in an apartment with a rent of N300, 000 per annum. And he is expecte to cough up this sum in bulk every year not taking into consideration his other daily and monthly expenses such as feeding, clothing, electricity, transportation. Etc. Wouldn't life be easier and more manageable if Mr. A pays his rent on monthly basis? I. E. N25, 000 monthly. That way he can effectively manage his monthly expenses viz-a-viz his monthly salary. I believe the job of the government of Nigeria is to enact laws that would protect the citizens and make life easier for them. I therefore call on all Nigerians to join in signing this petition that the Nigerian Senate should pass a bill that rent payment in Nigeria should be on monthly basis.
